Viega does give interesting and often entertaining overviews of what we often take for granted. Some of the books arguments are debatable, but many more are a refreshing look at the dynamic information security industry. Viega has sat down and written his observations of what it going on. They are worth perusing, and the book is definitely worth reading.

Food industry urged to stop obesity.
Australia”s food industry is in a unique position to lead the world on responsible advertising and stem the tide of rising obesity rates, a coalition of health groups says.
The groups, including the Public Health Association, Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Obesity Policy Coalition, are calling on the food industry to put a stop to all advertising of junk food between the hours of 6pm and 9pm.
They say voluntary codes are just window dressing and fail to protect children from junk food ad campaigns on television.
Todd Harper, chief of the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation, said in a statement the food industry needed to acknowledge the urgency of the problem.
‘The food industry is in a unique position to lead the world by recognising that advertising high-fat, high-salt and high-sugar foods has no place being drilled into children”s minds on TV screens,’ Mr Harper said.more
Are 2010 host cities doing enough?.
This raises the question whether the traditional methodology of coining a tag line and building an advertising campaign around it is enough for yielding maximum branding mileage for 2010 destinations. A new chapter in destination branding One of the greatest destination branding successes of modern times hails from the city of Seattle, when back in 1986 John Yokoyama, the owner of Pike Place Fish, a retail fish market in Seattle”s historic Farmer”s Market, and his employees committed themselves to becoming world famous.Remembers Yokoyama: ‘Originally, we wondered, How are we going to become world famous? We don”t have any money to advertise!” Jim told us we didn”t have to know how to become world famous. He told us that when you”re generating a powerful vision, the future just unfolds. He told us not to believe in it.more

Illinois should follow Missouri”s lead on personal injury lawyer.
Currently, all law firms advertising in Missouri must have a disclaimer which states, ‘The choice of a lawyer is an important decision and should not be based solely upon advertisement.’
The proposed new rule changes would put some guidelines in place as to how the disclaimer can be presented in both print advertising and broadcast commercials. The intention behind the rule change is to make sure advertisers do not diminish the effectiveness of the disclaimer in their ads. Another rule change would ban celebrities from attorney ads unless the celebrity is a current or former client.
If the full Board of Governors of the Missouri Bar approves the new rules, the recommendation to approve would go to the Missouri Supreme Court for final adoption.
Contrary to the views of a few personal injury lawyers, the proposed rule changes in Missouri are intended to make sure advertising does not go too far and potentially mislead the public.more
All-in airfare advertising not ready for take off.
It”s been 20 months since Parliament passed legislation calling for ‘all-in’ advertising for the airline business in Canada.
The provision to require airlines to include all the extra fees, surcharges and taxes in ads was to be enacted after Transport Canada held consultations to sort out how to move forward without harming domestic airlines.
No formal consultations have taken place since the bill passed in June 2007 and there is no time frame to carry any out.
Chris Day, spokesman for Transport Minister John Baird, said ‘informal’ talks with provinces and industry continue, and ‘nothing’ in the bill ‘is off the table at this point.
‘In a time of economic uncertainty, however, it is important to take the time to make sound decisions that take into account all needs,’ said Day.more
